Ruby Hancox

Swim Wild Academy Instructor

Originally from Buckinghamshire, I moved to Cornwall to study Geography in 2021 and have loved being by the sea. I knew living in Cornwall would suit me as I’m quite outdoorsy and love anything water-related and felt I was almost a local having spent every summer down here for as long as I can remember – Cornwall and the pool have always been my second home!

A little about me away from swimming! – I’m an avid reader, I enjoy playing music and can play both trumpet and flute, currently specialising in trumpet in orchestras. I love exploring and going on long walks and sea swims all over the UK. I love sports and I currently play rugby which is good fun!

Sport is a huge passion of mine. Growing up I tried lots of things and eventually focused on swimming. I swam competitively for over 10 years with my preferred event being long distance front crawl. I first got involved with swimming teaching through a voluntary scheme at my secondary school while working towards my DofE and continued this through the next four years. It was while doing my DofE I began to coach at my swimming club working with swimmers ranging from beginners to county level swimmers. Naturally this progressed in doing my swimming teaching qualifications and 3 and a half years later here we are! In total I have around 6 years of experience starting as a volunteer and progressing to a fully qualified instructor in 2019. I have loved getting to meet and help so many children learn the fundamental skill of swimming and always aim to make my lessons fun and engaging. I pride myself in my ability to remember names so always try to address each child on a personal level. It has been a privilege and a joy to share in and provide the experience of learning key skills to be able to swim, gain water confidence and understand water safety to so many children and hope that I will continue to do so for many more.
